Executive Function Skills and Self-Care

Executive function skills are largely controlled by the prefrontal cortex in the brain. If our prefrontal cortex isn’t working well, our executive function skills will suffer. It’s, therefore, vital that we take good care of our brains! Here are three ways to strengthen our prefrontal cortex:
  1. Get enough sleep. When we don’t sleep, we’re not at our best. We don’t focus as well and it’s more difficult to make decisions. Getting enough sleep is especially important for those of us who already struggle with executive function issues.
  2. Eat well. While greasy, carb heavy, and sugary foods can be delicious, they don’t serve our brains well if we consume them on a regular basis. Eating mostly fruits, vegetables, and a healthy amount of protein can improve brain function.
  3. Exercise. Studies have shown that exercise, especially in the long term, can improve executive function skills. Aerobics, martial arts, and yoga are particularly helpful.
